What is Chronic Inflammation?
Inflammation. A word that we hear so often but, what exactly is it?
Inflammation is your body’s response to sickness as it helps to repair itself. Simple things such as the common cold, or a minor cut can activate the immune system’s inflammation response. This is healthy and necessary for the body to rebuild itself and function. Inflammation is a protective measure, a healthy response to an injury. In a healthy body inflammation is used to repair and rebuild damaged cells. The problem begins when the body cannot bounce back after an injury.
When inflammation becomes chronic the body system becomes overworked and imbalanced and a person’s immune system begins to work improperly. This is when a whole host of diseases can begin to develop.
Problems with chronic inflammation are occurring at an alarming rate in today’s world. Some contributing factors to chronic inflammation are; stress (lack of coping mechanisms for managing stress and stressors), poor nutrition (lack of proper nutrients), environmental toxins (smog and household toxins), genetics (disposition to a particular disease), limited physical activity, and reliance on medication. Even with the obvious fact that most of us face many of these problems; we can prepare ourselves to protect our health and be proactive in our approach to managing these risk factors.
